Grey seals give birth just once a year, and the mother will quickly shed about 30% of her own body mass while her pup gets three times bigger. Seal pups are completely stopped drinking milk at just 18 days old, and then they spend up to three weeks using up their fat stores until they're ready to go into the sea and find food on their own. The Comeback of the Seal Population
It's a pretty remarkable story, actually, how the seal population has bounced back. Back in 1972, the federal Marine Mammal Protection Act made it against the rules to kill seals. This was a really big step, and gradually, the seal population came back strong and is now doing really well. For instance, a survey in 1994 noticed 2,035 seals in the waters around Cape Cod. By 2011, the National Marine Fisheries Service had even more recent data. Mike Hammill, a research scientist and head of the marine mammal section for Fisheries and Oceans, mentioned that the Canadian grey seal population has grown 40 times bigger since the 1960s. That's a huge increase, you know, showing how effective protection measures can be for wildlife.
Observing Seal Health and Habits
Scientists are always finding new ways to keep an eye on the health of these marine creatures. For example, heart monitors for seal pups are helping researchers keep an eye on animal health. These tools give them important information. Scientists from the newly created Northwest Atlantic Seal Research Consortium (NASRC) are using information gathered by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health (MDPH) to understand more about these animals. They're looking into how different things affect the seals, like their food, their environment, and their overall well-being. It's all part of a bigger effort to make sure these populations stay healthy and continue to thrive in their natural homes, which is really important, you know, for the whole ocean ecosystem.
Different Kinds of Seal Creatures
